AMERICAN IDIOT

American Idiot is a sung-through rock musical based on the 2004 concept album of the same name by punk rock band Green Day. The show follows the journey of friends Johnny, Will, Tunny, and the rest of their community as they struggle to find meaning and identity in a post-9/11 world. In hopes to escape the media-consumed, unsatisfying life of suburbia, the three friends flee the limitations of their hometown for the rush of city life, but are quickly isolated from each other when life pulls them in different directions. Empowering, edgy, and bursting with energy, American Idiot brings us a relatable story that resonates with all of us, begging the question, “What does it mean to be young in contemporary America?”

Elements:

Aerial Silks: In our production, we made use of aerial silks to represent what was not real on stage. This mainly took form during any scene with St. Jimmy, the character that personifies Johnny’s drug addiction, and any drug induced hallucinations that follow.

TVs: The TVs in our production were used for multiple different things, including clips of the current world crises and news reportings in the opening of the show, as well as date cards for each of Johnny’s letters, creating a timeline across the stage through the TVs of the journey we follow.
