ARTISTIC DIRECTING / PRODUCING

Company 157 @ UCSD

I was the Artistic Director of the student organization Company 157 at UCSD during the 2021-2022 year in which I had the privilege to do artistic programming and producing for the school year. I assessed the student theatre needs on campus and saw a lack of opportunities for theatre students in new student works, and bringing together different artists to collaborate on those works. With the mission to uplift student projects and create a larger network as our first year back to in-person theatre after the pandemic, I was able to produce 18 new plays from October-June and established a consistent community within the organization, having over 80% of students participating, being new to our organization and continuing to audition and apply in following productions. The productions serviced over 100 students participating in the productions during the school year, making us the second largest theatre organization on campus, and served ~700 students and community members that came to see our productions during the year.

I was responsible for creating the artistic vision of the season, selecting the works that were produced, and producing those works by organizing all actions needed to make the productions successful, and delegating those tasks to the board of directors I oversaw (Management, Technical, Marketing, Education & Outreach, Finance).

Below are photos from the organization during my time there, and select photos from the shows that were produced.

Muir Musical @ UCSD

In addition to my Artistic Director position with Company 157, I also received the privilege to Co-Artistic Direct Muir Musical at UCSD, the only musical theatre organization at UCSD and the largest theatre organization on campus, for their 2021-2022 Season. With this position, I was responsible for crafting the artistic programming for the year, in addition to co-directing & co-choreographing the main-stage spring musical, along with delegating tasks to our board of directors to efficiently run the organization and produce the events and musical productions for the year. I co-Artistic Directed with my co-director/co-choreographer for the spring musical, Erica Kahn, and the fall production director, Molly Lasher.

My priority for Muir Musical was to foster the family-like community and environment the organization had upheld for years, as well as bring forth more community activities to make up for loss time during the pandemic, and program contemporary musicals that resonate with the time we are living in and the students at UCSD. In co-directing/choreographing the spring musical, Green Day’s American Idiot (portfolio featured above), we were able to create a team of 90+ people working on the production, and served 3,100+ audience members, making over $12,600 in ticket sales, while student tickets remained free. We also received attention from Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer and songwriter of Green Day, who posted our trailer on his Instagram. In addition to the successes of American Idiot for the organization, the organization thrived on general programming and administration as well, gaining hundreds of new followers on social media, selling out most performances, and having a consistent base of students coming to events, while introducing new students to Muir Musical.

We crafted a number of community events, some that unfortunately were cancelled due to an outbreak in COVID-19 cases on campus, but many that were still able to happen including Talkback with La Jolla Playhouse’s cast of Bhangin’ It, Muir Musical Movie Night: Chicago, American Idiot Talkback, Muir Musical Bonfire, Muir Musical Karaoke Night, and Showcase Under the Stars (a spring showcase open to the entire community, giving opportunities for students to direct, choreograph, and perform in musical pieces of their choosing).
